Filter requirements: Millions of litres of air

Internal combustion engines consume air in large quantities. An average petrol engine requires about 10,000 litres of air per litre of fuel.

This means:

The air filter in a 2012 Nissan Qashqai 1.6i should be replaced every two years or every 60,000 km. After 60,000 km, the engine has consumed about 4000 litres of petrol and 40,000,000 litres of air! A diesel engine consumes more than double. Due to the trend towards lower displacement combined with turbocharging of the engine, the air supply to the engine and the filtration of the sucked air has become even more important for efficient combustion.

And that’s not enough…

The air intake system of an internal combustion engine has been significantly improved over time. It is no longer a simple housing for the air filter, but an integral part of the vehicle’s emission system and part of the NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) strategy. An inferior or poorly installed filter not only increases the risk of premature engine wear, it can also be the cause of additional noise and vibration.

Blue Print air filters are manufactured with high-quality filter media to achieve the necessary protective properties and durability in terms of a long service life of the filter with excellent separation of dirt particles and high moisture resistance. Regular quality controls ensure that the filters manufactured are 100% reliable and perfect fit and prevent unfiltered air from entering the intake system so that the engine or its components do not ShadadadadadadHigh-tech processes get Blue Print Filters the required strength and strength to withstand the pressures that modern turbo and supercharged engines exert on the filters. The installation of original equipment quality filters ensures that engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions continue to match the original, factory values of the vehicle.

BP Air Filter

Dirt particles

The dirt particles present in the air can be highly abrasive coarse dust and sand grains that are visible to the naked eye, but also microscopically small soot particles (e.g. tyre rubber, silicon, brake dust, pollen or moisture). On paved roads, the average dust content in the air is 1 mg/m3. An air filter must therefore trap about 10 g of dirt particles in its service life. On dirty, dusty roads, this value increases up to 40 times.

If dirt particles pass the air filter into the system, increased wear of the pistons, rings, cylinder walls and valves is the result. In addition, dirt particles entering the combustion chamber can find their way into the crankcase, contaminate the oil there and affect the service life of the oil filter.

Each filter has two sides

With normal use, the air filter medium gradually accumulates with dirt particles. The more the filter clogs, the higher the pressure difference between the two sides of the air filter increases, especially for engines with forced air intake. This leads to an extremely strong suction on the clean side of the filter. The pressure difference, along with the strong pressure waves generated by a motor, can increase so considerably that an inferior air filter collapses. As a result, air leakage can occur, so that dirt can enter the system unhindered, or even immediate and severe engine damage should parts of the collapsed filter penetrate the engine system.

Regular change

An air filter should be replaced regularly as part of routine maintenance according to the recommendations of the respective car manufacturer. In very dusty road conditions, replacement should be done more frequently.

Driving with a heavily added filter can result in excessive fuel consumption and limited performance. It also leads to an unbalanced fuel-air mixture and thus to increased emission values and increased emission of soot particles (in diesel engines), which causes further problems for vehicles with diesel particulate filters.

The image shows the approximate amount of dirt particles that an air filter picks up during its service time.
