From the manufacturer
Protects precision manufactured components
The immediate consequence of innovations in engine technology is a further development of filter technology. Modern petrol and diesel fuel systems contain precisely manufactured components with tolerances of less than 2 μm that must withstand enormous loads. Fuel is not only burned to produce power, but in the case of a diesel engine, it also lubricates the moving components in the high-pressure pumps and injectors. The fuel must therefore be clean.
Impurities in the fuel
Unfortunately, contaminants – which enter the system during refueling and corrosion in metal fuel tanks – are commonplace and a danger to any modern fuel system. Even the smallest particles can damage the nozzle spigots and cause a change in the spray pattern. This in turn has a detrimental effect on combustion efficiency, fuel consumption, stability of idle and emissions.

Contamination by water and water separation
Abrasive dirt particles must be filtered out from both petrol and diesel fuel. However, there is additional filtration requirement for diesel.
Water molecules are a problem in diesel fuel systems. Condensate forms in the tank and the fuel may contain water molecules in suspended or emulsified form. Without good filtration, this water can cause components in the pump and injectors in the fuel system to rust.
Blue Print diesel fuel filters use a water resistant coalescence material that allows the fuel to pass but retains water. The separated water collects in droplet form at the bottom of the filter container. There it can be drained as part of routine maintenance.
